Summary
When Coriolanus was 14, Grandma'am died. They were starving and on the brink of losing their home. Tigris mentioned selling her body to buy food, but he couldn't let that happen. He needed to protect her, and school didn't pay.
So Coriolanus joined the Peacekeepers.
Then he and his comrades were sent to war on another continent, lured by the promise of a better Panem for everyone, Capitol and District.
But when he returned, broken and weary, all he found were greedy Capitol elites who had profited from their sacrifice. Not only that, the Tenth Hunger Games were around the corner.
To avoid succumbing to his rage and killing every Capitolite, he needed to escape. Somewhere far away where he could be left alone.
Somewhere like District Twelve.

It's a disgusting sort of place, really, and he'd avoid it for the rest of his presidency if he could. But that's where he meets the strangely enchanting Lucy Gray Baird. Faced with a rush of feelings that threaten to overflow into obsession, Coriolanus does everything in his power to keep Lucy Gray close to him, even if it makes her hate him forever.
