Percy hated his brother with a cold, intellectual fury. Julius was everything Percy wasn’t—confident, charming, at ease in his own skin. So when his brother decided to take him out for his 21st birthday, Percy should have said no, should have retreated to the familiar sanctuary of his workshop with its comforting smell of gunpowder and oil.
But when he’d moaned to his best friend, Vax had merely shrugged, his dark hair falling across one eye. “I’m working tonight. And we’re doing post-birthday breakfast tomorrow anyway. Maybe Julius is trying to not be an ass for once?”
Percy had scowled behind wire-rimmed glasses but he’d given in. And now he sat stiffly in a strip club called “Glorious,” surrounded by pulsing neon lights that made his head throb and music so loud he could feel it in his chest.
“Julius, this really isn’t—“ Percy’s voice was drowned out by a sudden cheer from the crowd.
“Little brother, just watch.” Julius smirked, his perfect teeth gleaming in the dim light.
Percy hates his birthday almost as much as he hates his older brother. So it was definitely a bad idea to combine the two.

Occtis opened his eyes and looked down at the paper again. The pen hovering in the air had splotched ink onto the blank space, and he sighed, scrubbing his free hand through his tangled hair.
There was absolutely no reason why he should be having this much trouble with this paper, other than the nagging headache and the strange chill that had been making him shiver for at least an hour, even though the dorms were enchanted to stay at a pleasant temperature. He knew the material, this wasn't one of his harder classes, and it should have been an easy enough assignment, except for how it wasn't.
Or: Occtis spends finals week growing dangerously sick in his dorm room, with no one around to help him except his new familiar, and learns for the first time just how deeply a dead thing loves him.

The overwhelming rush of sensation and imagery and information was thick and sharp and something that felt almost painful. It was more, he thought, than he would have been able to comprehend even on a normal day.
This was so obscenely, absurdly far past normal that there were no words to even try and describe it.
