The prospect of Regis leaving bites into Geralt with a sting he didn’t expect. Somehow he didn’t think of this before, and that, he tells himself, is what this pain must be: the surprise of it. He doesn’t want to hold Regis against his will, not by any means. But if Geralt can stall a bit longer, surely he’ll grow accustomed to the idea of their parting, better steel himself for their goodbye.

"No other business?" Regis asked conversationally.
Geralt twitched slightly, but decided that if he was going to complain about his day, he might as well go all in. "I had another of those house calls where a woman answers the door and tells me that she can't actually pay me, but the monster is definitely in the bedroom, and she's sure we can work something out." He glanced up at Regis, who appeared to be trying not to laugh. He supposed that was fair, even if perhaps just a little bit of him had hoped... well, never mind.
"Well, you can hardly blame them, Geralt," said Regis, clearly entertained. "After all, you do cut a fine figure in all that black! And that new play of Dandelion's about you has been doing very well, I hear—I suppose it can only be encouraging them. I went to see it the other night, did I tell you? The wig they had you in didn't quite work, I must admit, but I thought they did a very nice job on the puppetry of the thing with all the tentacles. And the lass playing the princess looked very fetching in those seashells, if perhaps a little chilly."
