On all accounts, Jack should be begging at Aguirre’s feet to hire a new partner.
...But he wasn’t.
Of course, it wasn’t all bad. Ennis knew what he was doing. He rode his horse with ease on tough terrain, tied knots faster than Jack could blink, and controlled the sheep like he’d been doing it all his life. Jack supposed that was the truth; the rough calluses and sharp muscles sticking out of the man’s skin told the story of ranch work plenty enough. Hell, the decent cooking was a bonus, too. Ennis was also less of an eyesore than Jack’s last partner on Brokeback, evidently enough, with a halo of blonde curls framing his face and dark eyes that were often tucked beneath the brim of his hat.

Furiosa knows that the sensible thing to do is to back down, not to complicate what they have any more. That her life would be a lot simpler if Jack was just a means to an end. Stick to her training, stay in her shell, and run when the time is right. But all of that caution is overwhelmed by another voice screaming at her to do it. Climb the branch. Taste the fruit.
