After 4 million years of fighting the same person, one develops a 'code of conduct', for lack of a better phrase. It is a trust between rivals, trust that kept them both alive (to the annoyance of both factions). Breaking it would be tantamount to a treasonous act, an end to whatever fragged up comradery they had built between them. It would be cruel. And it was cruel. Accidental, but cruel.
