    Harry was just a young man, 14 years old, who spent most of his life in a cupboard, abused by his only living relatives.
    He'd let his hair grow out, purely because, since the incident last year where he blew up Aunt Marge, aunt petunia was too afraid to get close enough to use her dreaded hedge clippers on him. Which was fine with Harry, he hated aunt petunia's idea of what constitutes a 'good enough hair cut for the freak'.

    But, when Bill Weasley comments on Harry's longish locks after getting to the Weasley home after being rescued, and Charley congratulates him on taking the next step into being a man ... Harry is rightly confused. Especially when the elder Weasley brother hands him a strange tin with the words printed on the front, 'Sleekeazy's Hair Potion and Scalp Treatment', and advises him to use it.

    Or: Harry is confused by wizarding culture - shocker. But as usual, takes his cues from Ron and chooses to ignore it. That is, until his name gets pulled out of the goblet of fire and everyone seemingly turns on him.

    Forced out, truly on his own in the wizarding world, with no friends to guide him, Harry pulls up his socks and decids he better start figuring it out for himself.
