"Your ship was destroyed in the storm. I happened to be taking refuge in the reef below when I saw the lightning hit it. The deck went aflame and caved in on itself. You were the only one I was able to break out of the wreckage and bring to this island." The human slumped back into the rocks, scrubbing a wet hand over his face. A few swear words escaped him before he glanced back to Emmrich.
"I wouldn't expect a thing like you to know this, but we humans believe that when a ship goes down, its captain should go down with it." The man grumbled.
Emmrich perked up, choosing to ignore the majority of the human's statement. "You're the captain of the S. S. Rookery?" He tried to crawl closer, but the human jolted back and held a hand out.
"Don't you dare move." His voice was stern and rumbled like the thunder outside. "How do you know the name of my ship?"

Milos is a sea captain stranded after his ship is destroyed in a storm. Emmrich, a merman and important scholar of his colony, rescues him. They get a lot more than either suspected from their newfound relationship.

Another bout of silence fell over them. Emmrich brought his knees to his chest and he rubbed at the golden filigrees of his boots. There was something familiar to the way they talked— like they were back in the Apprentice Dormitories, huddled at the space between Johanna's bottom bunk and her nightstand. There, they'd talk about their plans for their future. Her visions were always so much grander than his, and she'd scold him constantly for his meekness; telling him that if he didn't 'grow a backbone' soon, he wouldn't get anywhere in life.
A memory crossed his mind. "Do you remember when we last came here together?" He mused. "It must have been almost thirty years ago, when I was assigned to investigate into that howling skull?"

Emmrich visits Johanna's skull one last time to say goodbye. They have a much needed heart-to-heart.

Summary
Ghilan'nain has been slain, but at a great cost to the heroes of the Veilguard. One of their members has fallen and two are missing, one in the clutches of Elgar'nan and the other to parts unknown. Worse, Solas is freed from his prison in the Fade and has taken the only means of defeating Elgar'nan and his Archdemon, leaving the remaining heroes dealing with the aftermath.
In the weeks that past since the events of Tearstone Island, those left standing at the world's end find themselves at the mercy of grief and loss, faced with difficult choices and the harsh consequences of those decisions. Do they focus their efforts on finding Neve and Rook, or do they accept their fates and try to carry on without them? Which path would honor Harding's bold sacrifice more: recovering their lost companions or finding the means to defeating Elgar'nan, no matter the cost?
When does "No Matter the Cost" become too much? Emmrich Volkarin already gave up Manfred and his own mortality for Lichdom. What else would he, could he, give up to recreate the dagger, just for the chance to get Rook back?
