When Feuilly is apprehended one night by Soup Inspector Javert while carrying a chicken carcass, he is saved by Enjolras, a young man hungry for soup and rebellion. Together they create strong bonds and delicious broth, but things come to a boil as Soup Inspector Javert closes in.

Being an explanation of how Champmathieu was freed from the prison of Toulon and became the gardener of a Parisian convent—though the author, alas, can account only for how the parties responsible for his abduction (fortuitous to himself) became co-conspirators, and not the details of their crime.
