Since his "abduction" ten days prior, Théodule has discovered no fewer than three escape routes from his room. Had this bumbled plot been Théodule’s sole reason for staying, it might have been good for three, maybe five days’ worth of entertainment. Unfortunately, one of his captors has bewitched him body and soul, and Théodule refuses to leave until has had his satisfaction.

    Montparnasse, his mind whispers.

Being an explanation of how Champmathieu was freed from the prison of Toulon and became the gardener of a Parisian convent—though the author, alas, can account only for how the parties responsible for his abduction (fortuitous to himself) became co-conspirators, and not the details of their crime.
