“I saw these, and I thought of you.” From under the desk, Gojo pulls out a large plastic bag that bulges with splotches of color and upends it unceremoniously on Kusakabe’s desk. Dozens of colorful lollipops tumble out of the bag: blue, green, yellow, red—rectangular blocks that smack against the desktop like an avalanche.
“Suckers?” Kusakabe asks, as if they could be anything else. There have to be three or four dozen of them, maybe more. “Didn’t have to go all the way to America to buy me suckers.”

To his amusement, Naoya tapped his chin and pretended to think. Where had he even picked that up? Finally, he nodded decisively.
Toji tilted his head. “Do you even know what secrets are?”
Another nod, his eyes narrowed, as if to say “Obviously.” He started handing over the fuzzy green leaves next. He was so cute. It was really annoying.
“Okay. Here’s my first secret,” Toji said, “I think I’d probably kill everyone here except you, if I could.”
After saving Naoya's life, Toji is tasked with keeping him company.

The kid was warm against his leg.

His gaze returned to the mountain of trash bags. It was a monument to his life: piled up, rotting, ignored, and uselessly stinking up the place. He’d treated his existence like a hand of cards he was waiting to fold.
"Alright," he whispered to the empty, filthy room. "Fine."
