Mother is acting strangely today.
Today is Rapunzel’s 18th birthday, and more than anything in the world, she wants to see the floating lights that descend over the kingdom like a swarm of fireflies, always on this particular night. But her plan to beg Mother for the chance to leave her tower is being complicated by the very strange mood she seems to have found her in.
Her mother keeps staring at her with a leaden intensity she’s unfamiliar with, sweeping down from her eyes, to her lips, to her body, and back up again. She hasn’t said a word since Rapunzel lifted her into the window of the tower, simply unloading her basket full of fruits and vegetables and a few other miscellaneous items in silence. It’s extremely unsettling.
