“Jayce?” Viktor whispered into the air.
And, in Viktor’s mind, he heard a reply, instantaneous and desperate: Viktor.
The air seized in Viktor’s lungs. He brought both hands to his staff, clutching it just as desperately as the voice that’d rung out in his mind, to keep himself steady. The warmth roiled through him, and, no, it wasn’t just warm, it was hot. It was burning.

Summary
After a couple of weeks of caretaking, Jayce's condition has seen a lot of improvement. His body is regaining weight, the brusies on his body have been healing and his mind has been feeling more relaxed and clearer, although still pretty fragile. All of this was nice, but there was still something that has been filling Jayce with concern and impatience, that being his leg that even after weeks has not shown any remarkable improvement, leaving him confined to the same room, awaking in him something that he thought was far behind him and that now threaten to haunt him as it did back in the cave.
Or: Jayce has been bedridden for quite a while and monotony is starting to take a toll in him, unable to leave the bedroom because of his leg and making him feel distressed at the thought of feeling trapped again.

Summary
There’s more to it than just a smile.
Something so small but so disarming coming from this man before him who’s evolved now, not quite a man any longer but more. He finds himself coming back to that moment often; the very fabric of his being torn apart at the seams fighting with decision.
But the past is just that. All decisions have their roads, some to dead ends and some ever winding. Jayce is pulled back to reality by slender fingers smoothing over his bare shoulder, coming to a stop with a subtle, grounding squeeze at his bicep as his tailbone meets a nearby workbench.
“Jayce?”

The Defender of Tomorrow is on his deathbed, and The Machine Herald comes to visit.
“And this is your favourite memory? This version of me?!” He gestures to his form and the leg brace.
While Jayce did feel guilty about making him relieve a past where he was suffering, this is the version of Viktor that he preferred. The one that he met, worked and fell in love with.
Slowly, he grasps the other’s wrist to pull his hand away to speak. “You always thought that there was something wrong with you, but your imperfections are what made me fall for you in the first place, Viktor.”
