The party was winding down, music quieter as the din of talking and laughing dissipates. He didn’t want the party frat to find out he wasn’t a party guy. Or that he was gay. And especially not that he had a bonus hole in his boxers instead of a dick. Or really anything about him. At all. But the couch was engulfing him, dragging him down into glorious, cushioned warmth and this was cozy, being surrounded by his maybe-friends and…darkness.

Summary
It's no mystery what will happen to the slaves should their attackers win. Those who are of their raider’s clan would be freed of course, but the rest will be killed, used for sport by the victorious army, or if they are particularly comely, they might be taken in by higher ranked warriors as brides. Hasen knows what he looks like, and the years of hunger and beatings have done nothing to improve his gangly fourteen-year-old appearance. Thank the gods it's his half-brother who leads the raiding army.

Summary
Ever since his mom moved here after the divorce, he’s been spending summers following the neighbor around. The man mostly spent all morning sleeping and smoking weed and all night hunting worms to sell to the corner store in town. He’d drive into town once a week to deliver them and come back, truck bed all loaded down with bullshit. Usually random equipment and tools whose motors he would fix up, sometimes for money, sometimes just to tinker, Kallum thought. And, best of all, he let Kallum tag along. It’s not exactly what one would call keeping out of trouble, but there are worse things a teen could get up to.
