The question is not will you marry me, which should have been the most important question of her life (a fact of which she is perfectly aware, thank you very much). It is not do you, Penelope Featherington, take Alfred Debling to be your lawfully wedded husband, because she has a few days left before their officiant asks her that particular question.
“I’m sorry,” Penelope says. “What did you say?”
She’d heard him, but she’s drunk in a hot pink feather boa and a penis crown and surely Colin Bridgerton cannot be asking her about regrets.

Penelope is quiet for a long while after he nodded his head and confirmed he was inquiring about whether or not she has changed her mind about having a baby with him.
"I…" she starts before swallowing once. "Well, I suppose as the years have gone on… I have imagined it a time or two, yes."
Colin knows she is telling the truth, and for the first time in a long time, he is also able to read her and surmise there is more still she is holding back.
"Is that something you wish for?" he asks cautiously. "A babe? One of your own?"
Pen's big, pale blue eyes blink at him twice slowly before she starts nibbling on her lip in a decidedly nervous gesture. "That is… We did not… We married for other purposes. I do not expect—"
"I am not asking what you expect," he interrupts, keeping his tone gentle, though, so as not to scare her out of this spell of vulnerability he's found her in tonight. "I am asking simply what you desire for yourself. Do you want a baby, Pen?"
"Yes."

Summary
There are very strict practices around marriage and feminine virtue in regency era England. As a result, Viscount Edmund Bridgerton is tasked with deflowering the brides of each of his sons on their wedding nights. For the first two that marry off, he manages to complete the act with relatively minimal discomfort and confusion for all parties involved.
