Alice’s fingers, slim and white and strong as marble, closed gently over hers. They felt cool against Hermione’s skin. Hermione cast the spell. Threads of gold, delicate as gossamer, tingled around their joined hands. Hermione took a deep breath. “Alice, will you come back here as soon as you’ve had your fill of hunting?”
“I will.”
Hermione shivered. The vampire’s voice was still low and hoarse with need. She tightened her grip. “And will you stay with me afterward, as long as I please, until the day I see fit to release you?”
Coal-black eyes gazed back at her, hungry and wild as the night. “I will.”The threads sank into their skin, absorbing until all that remained was a faint, residual warmth. It was done. Hermione let go and, at the same time, released the magical bonds that held her prisoner. “Go then,” she said. And, with only the faintest whisper of sound, Alice was gone.
