In hindsight, maybe Felix should have seen this coming. Things have been busy in Fhirdiad recently, mounds of paperwork and meetings with foreign dignitaries, and Duke Felix Fraldarius has always strictly adhered to his schedule. Dimitri’s work ethic is only slightly less draconian, so he hasn’t had the time or the energy recently to warm his husband’s bed. Right here, right now, during what is supposed to be a lunch break, Dimitri is taking advantage of the gap and making up for lost time.

“Will you shut up?” Felix shoves a thick piece of waffle into Dimitri’s mouth. “Eat.”
Dimitri obliges, darting his tongue out for just a moment to catch a bead of syrup on Felix’s fork.
Ashe glances between them and then towards the front where Annette is trying (very badly) to cook bacon. “Excuse me.”By afternoon, after long, tedious meetings about troop assignments and logistical needs and integrating Alliance troops into the existing army, Dimitri is starting to notice that their allies keep casting strange glances in their direction.

“We’re not going to make it past Varly with you looking like—” here Hilda gestures vaguely but with immense feeling at Dimitri’s entire person. “I’ve seen corpses that look better than you, your Highness.”
Dimitri just keeps his one eye fixed far, far away.
“Perhaps that is because I am already as good as dead myself,” he rasps, in that same hoarse, creaking voice from before, and Hilda groans—loud and long and going shrill at the end as all her frustration boils over—slapping her hands to her face like its in danger of falling off. It might as well. Just that kind of fucking day.
“Dimitri,” she says, through her fingers, “if you don’t shut the fuck up about basically being dead, I am actually going to kill you.”

Hilda saves Dimitri at Gronder Field, which is all well and good, except he’s half-mad and they’re, like, a hundred thousand miles away from Alliance territory. So it’s actually not well or good at all, is what she’s saying.

Summary
When Sylvain is six and a half and climbs to the top of a tower with no one’s hand in his, he realizes that each and every one of the people he loves has been born as a gift to something else. Dimitri was born for Faerghus, and Felix was born for Dimitri. Glenn was born for the royal family, and Ingrid was born for Galatea and for Glenn. He realizes, too, that what they’re for decides their future. Dimitri will lead them into a better world. Felix will guide his path, and Glenn will protect his life, and Ingrid will bind her future to theirs.
And Sylvain, who was born for the border, will stand in a watchtower. He will see the enemy before it comes, and he will keep Dimitri and Felix and Ingrid and Glenn safe.

He closes his eyes. The truth of the matter is he already knows what he’s going to do, because no matter what it is, even if it’s this, if the only other option is to let Dimitri die then that’s no option at all. It’s a horrible realization to have at quite possibly the worst time, that no matter what he said, no matter what horrible things he’d seen from Dimitri, despite all of that, he’d still do whatever it took to keep Dimitri alive.
