A low snarl tore from his throat as his quills bristled, his eyes burning with an eerie glow. A dark stir of energy rippled inside him, and he gasped, clutching his chest in pain. This time, it felt different—stronger, deeper. Shadow had always dismissed Doom's threats, confident in his belief that no force could break him. He was the ultimate life form, the one being with the strength to resist the Black Arms' control. But in this moment, Shadow felt a stark vulnerability unlike any he'd known before. The sky pulsed with another wave of crimson as the structures in the distance finished coalescing. “I am inevitable. You are nothing.” Doom's voice echoed, and Shadow screamed, agony seizing his body, as something darker took hold of him.

It had been a long and difficult 27 years since the Hail Mary had launched. Not as terrible as it could have been, but not easy. Humanity had survived and adapted, as it always did. There had been terrible wars. There had been incredible acts of kindness. There had been massive scientific breakthroughs. And now, there were two distant blips of Petrova-light, picked up by the Deep Space Network, hurtling home. Two probes, braking hard as they hurtled toward Earth holding the secrets to its salvation. They were late, or at least, not very early, but they were here.
Grace may have made his peace with dying to save Rocky, but Rocky insists they return to Earth.

Ryland Grace will only live for a short part of Rocky's life, something the Eridian can't seem to come to terms with. But when Grace suddenly is changed into an eridian, Rocky's problem seems to have been solved. But is that even something Grace wants? The two have to tackle the difficult realities they are now facing, leading Grace to an impossible choice.
Live a longer life in a body that is not his, or let Rocky spend the rest of his life without him.

“Grace. What are you testing, question?”
Rocky. I can’t put this all on the guy right now. He should be happy. We are going to Erid. We are going to save his planet.
“CBC. A complete blood count.” I answer, hoping he doesn’t ask me why.
“Purpose, question?”
Rocky, please. I’m trying to spare you right now.
Basically, Grace gets exposed to a dangerous amount of radiation during an EVA and doesn't want to tell Rocky bc of what happened to Rocky's crew <3
THIS IS A REWORKED VERSION OF "TEMPEST" - after some comments, I wanted to keep the soul of the story, but make it more scientifically plausible. While there are still probably some inaccuracies, I still hope this isn't as messy as before.
