The little boy climbed up on his bed and held Tenko up, inspecting him again, and Tenko wished that he wasn’t so old and shabby. Perhaps the boy wouldn’t love him as much this way, perhaps he would grow tired of him and prefer a newer toy, one who wasn’t crumbling and peeling.
“You know, you’re a lot like me,” the little boy said, turning Tenko around, softly brushing his bandaged fingers over Tenko’s hair and clothes, and Tenko listened intently. “Your face is all cracked, and your paint is coming off...but you’re still good, on the inside. I can tell. I bet nobody loved you in that store, all by yourself.” He frowned suddenly. “Sometimes it feels like nobody loves me, either. But it’s okay. Now I have you, right? And you won’t ever yell at me or hit me. And it’ll be just the two of us, and we’ll be best friends now, okay?”
