Harry stared at Riddle for a long second before he built up enough courage to face pain once more. He could do this, it would be fine. He could face pain — pain was fine. Harry had been in pain his whole life, he could deal with this. He’d be dead soon, and he wasn’t about to do anything Riddle asked. He’d rather die than allow Riddle to understand any of what Harry thought.

Summary
After death Harry expected peace, not a second childhood.
An incident long before his birth has left Death waiting for a suitable master. The world must be balanced, after all, and Harry, unwilling participant that he is, finds himself standing squarely on the scales.
Unfortunately, Death has a flair for the dramatic and seems to enjoy making Harry’s life harder than it needs to be.
