Summary
Veronique never hears the one that sneaks up on her. She hasn't even resolved to start moving before she turns to come face-to-face with a creature, faceless except for round, shiny lenses. They belong to a black gas mask. The person underneath it has already anticipated Veronique's shock, and an outstretched hand prevents her from screaming out. The overpowering smell of a rubber glove fills her nostrils. And then they are on the ground. He's on top, straddling her. Veronique's own reaction surprises her because she doesn't freeze up—she fights back. She aims between the legs like she'd been taught in self-defense training. But it does nothing. Doesn't even stagger him. Now she panics and flails with all of her limbs, slapping, scratching, and clawing. Still, the hand won't let her make a sound. This fills her with dread. More than being found out and caught.
Amerykans'kyy, it is not safe. Not safe.

Summary
Yellow was her color. Yellow was everywhere in her life. Her reason to live.
Yellow was her love. Yellow was in her eyes, woven into her existence.
Shades of yellow covered her days and nights, a constant that refused to fade.Bright, golden hues blinded her--a curse masked as a blessing. She opened her amber eyes under the yellow sun and stared, unblinking, until they melted into one with its glow. Yellow illuminated everything, yet cast shadows that she couldn't escape.
One day, she would look away. One day, she would leave the golden cage she had mistaken for warmth.
But not today. For today, she would bask in the sun--her wretched first love. Just for one sunny day. Then she'll leave its gaze altogether.
