    Holmes travels home to London as soon as he finds out that Watson has, in a small way, come to the attention of Colonel Sebastian Moran. While he has been away, Holmes has kept up with Watson’s stories. One in particular, The Gloria Scott, has been decorated with romanticism in a manner that worries Holmes. Not because Watson has ruined an instructive lecture, but because of how closely Watson’s imagined version of events reflects something Holmes has hidden for years about his friendship with Victor Trevor, and about himself.
    But how much is conjecture, and how much does Watson actually know?

    We are the ill-fated sons of glory, dear brother. Mycroft had said that before, hadn’t he? The recollection was swirling, misty. Mixing crudely with the gray fog that had been creeping down the rickety attic stairs all day. Infiltrating his mind with fear. Unreal, most likely. The pirates you so used to admire had notoriously short lives.

    Victor certainly hadn’t lived for long. Redbeard, he’d liked to be called.

    Mind palace Mycroft. I thought I told you to go away. You’ve already said all of this.

    Is it not still relevant?

    Sherlock didn’t bother to answer. It was, in fact, not relevant. Dying this way – if that were indeed to be his fate – would involve no regret. No introspection. It is what it is. I’ve fought for good. I know I have. On the side of the angels.

    This fic is technically the third part of a series, but it stands alone as well. NOTE: The title was changed from "Genius is a Star Whose Light (is Soon to Sink in Endless Night)", just because it was ultimately too unwieldy.
