Gaius immediately assumed the worst, but it was an easy mistake to make. The grim expression on Merlin’s face as he stalked into the infirmary did not particularly shout ‘success.’ Neither did the way he flung his pack and jacket in the general direction of his bed without bothering to actually enter his bedroom, then spun on his heel and went straight to the storage shelves, glowering at the jars and bottles as if daring one or more of them to make a hostile move. They didn’t, and he cursed, not quite under his breath.The old man flinched. “Merlin…” he started. “What happened?”
“Oh, you know,” said Merlin over his shoulder, with a sarcastic flip of a hand. “Same old, same old. Woke up, had breakfast, summoned a goddess; nothing worth mentioning.”
