"You set me up with someone who yells at the valet and does not tip the waiter. If I get murdered and dismembered tonight - and I could, A-sang, do you hear me? I could, because their family is probably not above murdering and dismembering and his father is still baying for my blood - I will come back as a fierce ghost and spend the rest of my miserable afterlife haunting you!”

    The silence after his tirade lasts long enough that Nie Mingjue rips the phone away from his ear to frown at it. Was his brother ignoring him?

    “HUIASA - ”

    “Hello?” a voice says over the phone, and it is most assuredly not his brother’s.

    - Lan Zhan and Lan Huan are raised by both their parents
    - Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze live after Wei Ying turns four
    - Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian are a loving couple
    - Wei Ying is adopted by the Láns
    - he and Lan Zhan are together way sonner than in the canon

    In a world where demons and other supernatural creatures are sent to government-sanctioned reform and correctional institutes, it's possible to earn a living as a bounty hunter, hunting down escapees to ensure the safety of society.

    Nie Mingjue is such a hunter, and is sent after a pair of Huli Jing escaped from one of these facilities. A selfless act of protection, and an encounter with a local doctor and demon-sympathiser begins to open his eyes to a truth he had never seen before, however.

    Meanwhile, newly mated Wei Wuxian, a dragon snatched from the rivers as a whelp, and Jiang Cheng, a snake demon who can't remember if he ever knew a life outside of the institute, are enraged and desperate to reclaim their brood, as their first clutch of eggs is cruelly taken away from them by facility wardens.

    Resourceful and angry, the pair might have set in motion events that they never even anticipated.
