Summary
Thanks to a twist of fate (or cosmic joke?), Dean Wincester is now co-owner of Motel California, a barely-hanging-on spot in the middle of nowhere. It all started when Chuck thrust the papers at him, yelling, “It’s yours!” Sure, the place was a dump and his confidence was shot after 15 years behind bar, but maybe, just maybe, he could turn the motel into, well, something?
Turns out redemption runs right through the local oddballs in the neighborhood. There’s Charlie, the relentless firecracker—ready to brighten his mood no matter how grumpy he gets; Kelly, the cleaner with her pint-sized philosopher of a kid; Billie and Mort who run the diner down the road, where the food’s greasy enough to give you a heart attack; Bobby and Rufus, the record store sages who preach classic rock like it’s gospel; and Claire, the perpetually grumpy shopworker who terrifies Dean more than prison ever did. Then there’s the enigmatic Castiel—piercing blue eyes, arriving every month like clockwork, alone yet never lonely.

Summary
Sam pulls Dean off the rebar. Dean wakes up, and Castiel is still gone. Nearly six months after Castiel's death, Dean finds himself staring down the barrel of addiction in a futile effort to relieve the pain from an injury that refuses to heal. Though, after a hunt gone wrong and one last bad decision, Dean finds himself nearly Baker Acted in Florida, forced into a recovery he doesn't want to face and memories he can no longer bury.
Halfway across the country, Castiel finds himself along the Oregon coast, seven months after Jack sent him back to Earth. When he embarks on what was meant to be a journey to discover both himself and Dean’s past, a dream sends him careening back into Dean’s path, to face a world he never wanted to imagine. While Dean comes to terms with his grief, Castiel scours the country, searching for any sign of him.
What he finds is Dean living out his retirement inside of a rehabilitation facility—and what Dean finds is the love of his life, brought back to him.
