Summary
Kakashi never truly understood the Hatake Curse that led to his clan’s demise, all he knew was that it played a factor into his father’s depression before his suicide.
No - he never truly understands until he experiences the curse for himself, reliving the same day of Rin’s death over and over again until he’s about ready to just die to end it.
But Kakashi made a promise to his dead teammate - one he’ll carry out even if it means taking Rin’s place and dying in the process.
Kakashi would rather die than go insane, after all.
The Hatake Curse led to many things, Kakashi read what it did to his ancestors, he witnessed what it did to his father after that mission no matter how much he tried to ignore him.
If he saved Rin and kept his promise… it didn’t matter what happened to Kakashi himself.

Kakashi jumped to his feet with a snarl. He did not know of a genjutsu that could fool the sharingan—would not have believed it to be possible. But here, in this illusion that was so elaborately built and powerfully enacted, not only did his borrowed sharingan fail to dispel the illusion but it made him believe that he was still five, that his father just died, that Kakashi did not possess the sharingan at all.
