How long has it been since Rafael woke up on that exact bed, stripped down to just undershirt, pants and socks? There was a change of clothes on the bed next to him, a bright orange sundress that Rafael promptly threw under the rug – also orange – and tried to forget about. At least the rug is soft, so soft in fact he had to stop himself from asking where his captors bought it. They might actually answer by buying him another one, and the room doesn’t have enough space for a second rug. There’s just a bed, an empty wardrobe and a small desk with a chair. No mirrors – nothing that Rafael can break and use as a weapon. Just a lot of pillows, blankets and throws. Everything soft, completely harmless.
Could Rafael have imagined some months ago, when taking up a case against a cult that he’d end up here?___

Summary
Rafael hasn’t left their bed since the moment he got in it Friday evening – apart from a couple of bathroom breaks. Sonny stayed close the entire weekend, brought coffee – because the last thing they need is a caffeine withdrawal to top off the depressive spell – and food. He read Vonnegut out loud – and Cat’s Cradle doesn’t seem too comforting but whatever floats Rafael’s boat, Sonny thought – then brought his console into the bedroom, rearranged Rafael to lay half on top of him with a good view of the TV and went on to annoy Theodore the Neighbor by nosing in his business, which seemed to be the right move because at one point Rafael even pointed him in the right direction. Obviously the letter was in the toilet, how did Sonny not think of it? He kissed the top of Rafael’s head with a small ‘thanks, doll’ before returning for the letter and promptly getting shot by the Taxidermist. Rafael huffed at that, which means it was completely worth having to move through the house once again.

It’s not his fault he wakes up in terror, mistaking the familiar gentle hands for the touch filled to the brim with intent to take and hurt. It’s not his fault he gets flashbacks or falls out of reality, gets stuck in his head, in the repetition of that day, over and over again. It’s not his fault someone else woke up, shrugged and took two guns to a deli.

Carisi across from him snorts so hard, the beer comes out of his nose, throwing everyone into hysteria, and Rafael drops a small - and he hopes - indignant huff. Something sarcastic, something that says he's above such impoliteness.
Even if the only thing he wants is to be a part of the festivities. He knows he's not exactly welcome.
The table separating them is a reminder. They might be drinking in the same bar, might be on the same side of the law, but Rafael is not one of them. Never was. Never could be.___
