Because bleeding red implied romance, implied love — implied giddy feelings and heartfelt confessions.
As Megan will come to learn in the next agonizing thirty seconds, the longest half-minute of her entire nineteen years of living, Yoonchae and Dani are none of that.
Instead, they are:
Yoonchae, cupping her hand on the space between Dani’s shoulder and neck. Yoonchae, closing the gap between their faces. Dani, closing her eyes and submitting, like it’s the next move in a meticulously choreographed dance, and she’s simply playing out her part. Like it’s natural. Rehearsed.
Megan’s thoughts are reduced to dusty remains, pure static.
Or: Megan's a mess, but so are Dani and Yoonchae. Behind locked doors, they're just far better at hiding it.

But – “Ohmygosh, Yoonchae, we should do matching costumes!” Megan had squealed from her side of the room, one day back in September. Yoonchae had just looked up at her from her phone.
“For Halloween, duh,” Megan had said, throwing out her hands, effectively launching her phone onto her comforter. She’d immediately strained to grab it again, then turned it around to show Yoonchae a blurry Pinterest photo of two girls dressed as an angel and devil, respectively.
Yoonchae had raised a brow. “Who’s who?”
“You’re the angel, obviously. And I’ll be your sexy devil.”
“My… sexy devil.”

Summary
“Hey, Sophia?”
Sophia pauses mid-step, turning her head to peek back at her roommate. “Yeah?” she asks, voice light and casual despite the faint thrum of apprehension rising in her chest. Yoonchae sits up straighter, folding her blanket into her lap, eyes wide and sincere in the dim glow of her phone screen.
“I think Manon’s good for you,” she says quietly, almost shyly. “And… and you’re good for her.”
For a moment, Sophia just stands there, frozen, her fingers curled tight around her towel. The words hit something deep and trembling inside her, something she’d been carefully keeping quiet for weeks now. She opens her mouth to respond but finds herself blinking rapidly instead, feeling her throat tighten around the sudden surge of emotion.
She swallows it down with a small smile, shaking her head as she musters her usual playful drawl. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Yoonchae,” she murmurs, voice gentle and affectionate. She steps into the bathroom, flicking the light on, and adds softly, “Go to sleep.”
But as she shuts the door behind her, the words echo in her chest, unravelling all her defences in the quiet safety of the room she called home.

After the last of the Riots, when Manon lay clinging to life in a hospital bed for days on end, Sophia silently retreated to only God knows where (actually, God and Yoonchae were the only ones who knew, but it wasn’t like Yoonchae was gonna tell anyone where Sophia fled to), and when Manon woke up from her coma, body still searing with pain, she saw four worried faces looking down at her instead of five.

Summary
Dani will blame it on the cancer. Its untimely diagnosis has left her fragile, weak, prone to human emotions she could’ve ignored prior. Despite her total hatred of Waiting for Godot, Dani is coerced into auditioning for her friend’s fall production of it. But when she meets Megan, bright, blinding (Alliterative B, her brain echoes distantly. A forceful sound. Emphasizes your point), and impossible to ignore, she find herself pulled into something stranger than Beckett’s play and Lara’s eccentric, unconventional directing style. She finds her plans to be detached and dignified about dying ruined.
Or: Dani makes some friends and loses a lot of sanity, and Lara gets a hit play.
