Summary
“We should go on a road trip,” Kris says.
Ralsei blinks. Attempts to contextualize his surroundings: he is on the floor of Kris’s room. Various empty chip bags surround him. Kris is sprawled out at his side on their back. Their phone is balanced against a tissue box and currently playing a movie. Ralsei reaches out to pause it—Thelma and Louise. Right. He…remembers that. Halfway, at least.
Kris says, “oh, did I wake you up? Sorry.”
“No,” Ralsei says, “or, yes, or—I don’t know.” He pauses, swallows. “What were you saying?”
“Me. You. Road trip.” Kris nudges him. “I don’t care where. Just—away. You know? We’re adults. Nobody can stop us!”
Adults. Ralsei sure doesn’t feel it. Not here, in Hometown, where sometimes he has to catch himself, remind himself that yes, he’s safe here. That she won’t find him here. That he’s blocked her number and he has an entirely new one besides. That in four days, it’ll have been four years since he…
“Okay,” Ralsei says, and he takes Kris’s hand. “Road trip. Let’s do it.”

Summary
Fig opened her mouth to speak but Ayda got there first. “Did I do something wrong? Should I not have said that?” She was prepared to leave if she had to. There was a worry starting to wrap itself around her shoulders that said she shouldn’t want this. That she shouldn’t want Fig to reach out and take her hand. That she shouldn’t want Fig to keep looking at her, even if she couldn’t look back.
That she shouldn’t want Fig to kiss her.

Summary
When December Holiday stumbles out of the woods in the middle of a snowstorm seven years after her mysterious disappearance, disoriented and amnesiac, Noelle thinks her sister's return is a miracle. But her joy is not destined to last. Because when Dess came back, she didn't come back the same.
The old Dess never used to sleepwalk. The old Dess wouldn't go out in the yard at night and start feverishly digging in the dirt with her bare hands. The old Dess didn't stand over her sister's bed, watching her sleep and whispering things in her ear.
In the light of day, this new Dess can almost pass for the old one. But in the dark dread of night, Noelle becomes increasingly convinced that something is deeply wrong with her sister. Proving her suspicions will push Noelle to the limits of her sanity, and closer and closer to a horrifying truth: That sometimes, there are far worse fates than death.
