Rat turned away to busy himself at his desk. There was all kinds of weird shit there - what looked like scraps of new flesh, artificial limbs half-made, an ancient-looking book lying open to show some intricate symbols Dan couldn’t make sense of, a toolbox unfolded to show some wickedly sharp instruments inside - and Dan took a step back, second-guessing his decision to be here. But before he could get far, Rat turned around, and in his hands was a remarkably innocuous object: a VR headset, or something that looked like one, anyway. Dan had never owned one, not with what they cost, but he had seen ads for them.

“Yield, sister,” he said, quite loudly considering how close they were - his voice rang out, bouncing off the colourful stone and filling the great stadium. Of course: he was projecting for the spectators, whose ecstatic noise she had begun to tune out. She squirmed beneath him, her face flushing with fresh humiliation, as the sound came back into focus and she recalled what it meant. Thousands of them - leering, shrieking, thundering their limbs against the stands - shades that surely ought to show them respect, as prince and princess of this realm. But she obviously had much still to learn about how things worked in the House of the Dead.

“What are you not doing?” Whitby asked, as Lowry palmed him clumsily through his cotton boxer-briefs. He was soft, of course, and the friction from the fabric wasn’t helping to change that, but he let Lowry do it once, twice more before he caught Lowry’s wrist in his hand and held it at his hip.
“I’m not fucking blowing you,” Lowry said, his hand flexing so he could slide his fingers under the hem of Whitby’s shirt. The tendons in his wrist strained under Whitby’s grip. His fingers were feverishly warm in the cool air of his cell, which they had all been told over and over never to call a cell, but which Whitby could never think of any other way. It was nicer than the quarters they’d all had while training for the expedition - softer sheets, a little desk and a chair and a reading light, a painting of a sailboat on calm seas hanging over the bed, even a private shower - but it locked from the outside.

“The flower,” said Ghost Bird. She came closer, kneeling at his feet, and Control’s head spun so hard he had to shut his eyes again. A cool hand on his forehead, slim fingers, dry knuckles. Control heard himself let out a sound, low and thick in his throat. He tried to grit his teeth against it, but it was too late. When had she set down the water? Because her other hand was on him now, taking his wrist firmly in her grasp, her thumb pressing into his pulse point. Her touch was so confident, brusque but gentle too. Control imagined himself a rabbit shaking in her arms, and she the scientist, affixing a tracker to his leg, or the veterinarian, parting his lips with a gloved finger to drip something sweet and cool into his parched mouth.

Clea looked around, taking in the crumbling remnants of their city, the the yawning chasms between each island, and buildings that clung to them burst open like overripe tomatoes to reveal their innards of peeling wallpaper and moldering furniture. That the painted family chose to remain in such a bombed out ruin, when so much of this world was still roiling with life and beauty, was proof enough that they had entirely lost their ability to see clearly. Or that Aline had painted them blind to begin with.
“You know things can’t stay as they are,” she said.
