Summary
Sometimes she has difficulty falling asleep.
Sometimes she goes out to count stars, but sometimes she stays in bed and counts sheep instead. She likes to imagine them jumping over the fence, bounding away to wherever their hearts desire; right around when she starts losing track of her numbers, she falls asleep.
Sometimes, though, she can't fall asleep, so she climbs into her parents' bed. Their warmth is very reassuring.

Summary
Sometimes she sneaks out after everyone's asleep. She finds her way to her favorite tree easily enough, and from there it's just a matter of counting.
Sometimes she keeps counting 'til she goes so high she loses track of her place. Maybe it'd be better to make a thousand cranes so she wouldn't have to start all over. Or, if she lived on asteroid B-612, she could watch sunsets 'til she went blind before she ran out of numbers. Really, there's no end to the things she can count.
Sometimes she thinks numbers are the best thing ever invented (and sometimes they're not).
