“Shauna! Shauna, oh my god! There’s a new phone and we can text and send pictures and talk all the time when we’re in college. It’ll be like right now except, you know, with pixelated pictures or whatever. I already asked my parents for Christmas. Do you still have money? Can you get one? Please, Shauna, please!”

Summary
“Do you know my friend Shauna?”
Shauna froze with a start. She had heard countless stories where Person A would help take care of Person B after a surgery. And usually a clueless Person B would then spew out countless amounts of secrets and inner thoughts to a very clued in Person A.
Shauna could lie. She could go back into Jackie’s room and say, Shauna isn’t here. Tell me all those pretty thoughts in your head Jackie. Tell me the fucked up ones too. Let’s make sure we cover everything.
“I am Shauna, Jax,” Shauna decided to go with instead. She stopped at the edge of the bed, looking down at Jackie.
“No, that’s Shauna!” Jackie pointed to a photo on her dresser. A small framed photo of her and Jackie from a birthday party when they were younger. “That’s my Shauna.”

Summary
“What do you see?” Jackie leaned back slightly, still holding the netting tight around Shauna’s upper face.
“Nothing.”
Her vision was spotty, mostly black with tinges of greens and blue. If she concentrated hard enough, she could identify the outline of the net, and Jackie’s silhouette lingering.
She felt Jackie’s hands behind her head play with the fabric, twisting and turning it until her head jolted back. Jackie had knotted the fabric and tied it tight across Shauna’s face. Her hands dropped from behind Shauna’s head and cradled her face. Her thumbs rubbed hotly across Shauna’s lips.
“What do you feel?”
“Everything,” Shauna replied.

Summary
“You guys haven't even asked what it is yet!”
Van closes her locker and stands next to Taissa, opposite Jackie and Shauna's communal bench. “Let’s hear it Cap.”
Jackie looks around, giddy with excitement. She clasps her hands and takes a deep breath before, “Kissing booth!” Her grin is wide, bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet.
Half the room is appalled, the other half intrigued. A few completely disregard Jackie’s idea, and go back to getting changed. Shauna can tell this is Jackie’s favorite idea yet.
It’s Shauna's nightmare.

Summary
As soon as Shauna stepped outside, she remembered how to breathe. She plopped down on a small bench outside the store, and reached for a pack of cigarettes in her back pocket. Being a mother has taught her many things. Her favorites being the wonders of liquor on the rocks and smoking a cigarette in the crisp air. She lit her cigarette, took a long inhale and let everything go. She closed her eyes and dropped her head back, not sure if she’d rather slow down the minutes of her break or speed them up so she could get the fuck home.
“Never would’ve taken you as a future smoker, Shipman,” the nickname blasted like a siren through her brain before she could even register who it came from. A voice she hadn’t heard in years cut through her ten minutes of peace in an instant.
Shauna lifted her head back up to its normal position without opening her eyes. She squeezed the bridge of her nose. “Jackie.”

Summary
“Last year, Jackie Taylor got hit like a freight train by Matthews—suffered a third-degree concussion and lost hearing in her right ear. She was planning to try out for the Olympic team. Now she’s lucky to be alive.” Martinez gestures to the newspaper again. “Taylor’s back with the Yellowjackets, but she can barely play. She’s timid, nervous—absolutely terrified of being on the ice.”
“What’s this gotta do with me?”
“The Yellowjackets wanna hire you, Shipman.” Martinez smiles. “They want you out there protecting Taylor. Help her get her confidence back. She was one of the best in the league before that hit.”
“They’re hiring me to play bodyguard?” Shauna mutters, eyes glued to how breakable Jackie Taylor looks. “Okay. Yeah. I’ll—yeah, sure, I accept.”

Summary
“Shauna’s dead in your world, and you’re alive,” Misty bulldozed over her stuttering. “Yet here you’re dead, and Shauna’s alive.”
Her breath left her body, eyes unfocusing as the realization began thrumming through her veins. The idea had been there, obviously, that she’d woken up in some parallel world to her own. Shauna’s ghost visage, who’d yet to reappear, said as much in her own cryptic way. She was evidently supposed to see Shauna again, which she thought meant she was about to die.
And maybe she did.
Her hand came up to her chest, feeling for her own heartbeat. It was there, steady and clear. Wherever she was, Jackie Taylor was alive, and whatever world she’d been zapped into had a living, breathing Shauna.
A Shauna without a Jackie, it seemed.

Summary
Shauna Shipman refuses to indulge. In anything: not relationships, or regret, or wondering where Jackie Taylor went twenty-five years ago. The answer, sitting freshly twenty and utterly confused in her bedroom in Wiskayok, doesn’t bring her any satisfaction anyway.
