“I just,” Pomni whispered, doing this little slow-blink that drove him nuts right up at him, and his heart clenched. She seemed surprised to admit, “I can’t think of anything to say.”
Jax thought that someone could have driven a train through the place right now and still he wouldn’t have turned away from her. The truth was he didn’t have any ideas himself of what to say, but in disclaiming this herself she hadn’t said anything he needed to respond to, anyway. He could have stayed silent and they both would have been content with that, he thought. But her eyes were so open and honest and there was this squeezing feeling in his chest that felt deeper than a heartbeat, and he heard his own voice pipe up, anyway.
“I …” he whispered. Quietly admitting, “Me, neither.”

Pomni stepped into the room just a little, leaning her weight back against the door. She thought about toying with him a little, but at the end of the day, she really just wanted to get down to it. Pressing her lips together, she glanced quickly around the hall, watchful for familiar faces that actually might question her if they saw who she was talking to.
When she felt the coast was sufficiently clear, she turned back to him. “What are you doing after work?”
Jax only stared at her for a beat or two, his eyes a touch wider than they had been a moment ago. He seemed surprised to hear her be so forward—an unintended effect, but not an unwelcome one.
At length, though, he smirked. “You tell me.”

They hadn’t ever talked about it, but they were always actively Not Talking About It.
This looked something like a crowd of people, N and Uzi weaving through it, Uzi grabbing N’s hand, and then the crowd dissipating, and neither of them letting go. They hugged more often than N suspected most friends did. They had fallen asleep side-by-side in the same bed more times than he could count. Sometimes, it looked like talking on the couch late into the night – so tired it made him feel drunk – and then somehow they’d not be talking anymore, just looking at each other, Uzi’s dark eyes wide open and sweet, the world spinning on everywhere except this moment, which could be a million moments or just one, but certainly one that they weren’t ever going to talk about.
Maybe they could have, once, but ever since Uzi had shared her secret with him, that option had gone out the window.

“Aww, I thought we were friends,” Jax sneers, eyes alight and testy. Pomni gapes at him, her face hot with embarrassment as he stands there and mocks her. Her jaw clenches shut, the irritation making her hands shake, “That’s low, even for you.”
“I can go lower.”

After her and Jax’s fight, Pomni’s been a little more on edge about everything with the Circus. She tries not to let their argument affect her and wants to move past it, but she’s unable to when Caine begins fixating on how great of a team Jax and Pomni make!
Now, Pomni has to face their dispute head on, something Jax is dead set on preventing her from doing.
