    “Think of it this way,” father said, when he saw Damian’s confusion again. “Punishments and discipline are to make lessons stick, right?”

    “I suppose,” Damian agreed tentatively. His grandfather wouldn’t say that. His grandfather would say what he always said: Pain is a god. Its rule is absolute. It shows us the way, it separates right from wrong, weak from strong.

    It is grandfather's voice that wins out, later, when his skin splits under his own blade. Pain is a god. And he has been well-educated in all ways of worship.

    It barely registers that strings of promises and apologies and cries of please, please, please are leaving his lips too fast to comprehend. He’s too lost in his thoughts to stop the motion now, and trips over his stumbling feet and over the netting– and suddenly he’s falling, plummeting, down, down, down

    Tim almost forgot how he learned how to fly. Almost.

    Summary

    There is a hole in the world in the library, and there is a hole in the world in your head, and there is a hole in the world in your former partner’s chest, deep in his lungs. Maybe you can do something about it, before it is too late.

    JEAN VICQUEMARE: An exhale, a flutter of his lashes. “Huh - Harry - time is it-”

    SAVOIR FAIRE: It is the sweetest and softest you have ever heard him say your name.

    PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT: It makes your knees weak.

    YOU: You lean on his desk, palm flat, leaning over him. “It’s early, Jean.”

    COMPOSURE: Your voice as soft as his.

    JEAN VICQUEMARE: He opens his eyes slowly. They track over you, one pale, one paler.

    VISUAL CALCULUS: The lamplight makes them nearly see-through. If you could just gaze into them a moment longer, you will remember everything.

    Another waitress places the gaudiest long island iced tea Jean ever did see in front of Harry. It’s a shade of blue so unnatural, it makes Jean wince.

    “What the fuck? When did you even order that? And also why?”

    Harry shrugs.

    “I think the bartenders have a bet going, honestly, I haven’t really ordered anything in weeks, the drinks just show up. Though they are usually more traditional, but hey, I swing both ways.” Harry says suggestively, dipping his head forward seductively and immediately poking himself in the eye with the bright purple plastic straw. “ Ow!”

    “Aren’t cops supposed to have good to great motor skills?” Jean mocks.

    “You don’t get the cop, you get me.”

    “There’s a big difference?”

    “Massive.” Harry lies, not breaking eye contact, trying to blindly use his tongue to get his straw back into his mouth.

    Summary

    “What are you doing?” Cicero asked slowly, his intense yellow eyes narrowed. The Argonian’s dull grey eyes could not meet his. He really had no idea at this point.

    “I will look inside,” he finally responded, his voice strained as his nose caught the scent of something beginning to rot. “They… I do not think they would like it if I let anyone in.”

    Cicero eyed him curiously. The Argonian swore he saw his nostrils twitch and that stupid little grin played on his lips. “They’re not here,” he said slowly. “I don’t think they’d mind.”

    The Argonian didn’t budge. “I will look for you,” he said, sterner this time.

    Cicero flashed a polite smile and backed away, putting his hands up defensively. “Alright, Lies-in-Wait. Cicero will wait here.”

    ~~~
    The Argonian wakes to find himself in a very messy predicament. Luckily, help comes along in the most unusual places.
