Summary
The summer he is eight years old, Armin finds himself under the care of Erwin, a local army veteran, while his grandpa works long hours to keep a roof over their heads. Armin adores Erwin from their first day together. What starts out as childish infatuation gradually shifts into something else, a secret love that will haunt him for the rest of his life. After Armin's best friend, Eren, returns from summer camp, he wakes in his basement one rainy night with a bloody nose and no memory of the last few hours. Everything changes as Eren begins to experience more inexplicable blackouts and nosebleeds.
As they both grow older, the trauma of that summer unravels, afflicting them in different, insidious ways. Eren soon becomes convinced he was part of a government experiment, determined to find out what happened to him as a child as reality is clouded in conspiracy. He struggles with uncontrollable bursts of anger, complicated relationships and sexual dysfunction. Meanwhile, Armin is emotionally fragile, filled with shame, and finds a masochistic comfort in his own sexual encounters. To protect Eren, and himself, he hides the truth, but the secrets can't stay buried forever.
