Summary
When he was a kid, his mum’d tell him to make a wish. Not just with candles on a cake, but everywhere. Make a wish, she’d say over dandelions and shooting stars that could be planes and eyelashes. Make a wish, she’d say, and Robert would squeeze his eyes shut and wish for stupid things, bikes and computers and his dad’s attention.
Make a wish, he thinks, looking at the starless sky, exhaustion deep in his bones.
The gentle thud of grass under boot makes him sit up, the curve of his spine painful as he struggles not to fall asleep.
“You’re trespassin’,” he says, before he can see who it is, voice trembling in a way he’ll deny. He’s not afraid of a scrap, not afraid of someone bigger takin’ a hand to him.
“Or you are,” a voice says back, low and a little growly but so familiar. Too familiar.

Summary
High on his thigh, where his legs drag together as he digs his toes into the sheets, is the sting of stubble burn. His boxers catch on it as he stretches, hip digging into the mattress, and the bite spreads like molasses, warmth creeping up his veins.

Summary
It’d been touch and go, Andy told him when Robert finally picked up the phone, but he’d made it. There hadn't been much else to say given the resentment still clinging to them at the time, but Robert had taken annual leave and headed back to Emmerdale, sat around the kitchen table as Vic cried on his shoulder and Diane fussed and Annie called from a bad connection in Spain, and braved himself to see his dad for the first time in three years.
In typical Jack Sugden fashion, he’d barely reacted to Robert’s presence, taking it as a given, and Robert had bitten his tongue and tried not to scream.

Summary
Cain had said it so easily — “Pack his bags and get him out.” — like Aaron wouldn’t question it, would toss Robert out by his ear for the sin of doin’ sommat the Dingles didn’t like. Would go right back to the party line that’s been echoing through the village since last summer, telling Robert to get lost, that no one wants him, that he’s not welcome here.
‘Cause Aaron had said it. Over and over, he’d said it.
More fool them if they’d ever believed him.
