Neil ran. It made sense in the same way that it didn’t. Once a rabbit, always a rabbit. Andrew didn’t think inevitability was supposed to feel like this. Andrew didn’t think he was supposed to feel, but Neil loved defying expectations. Or, at least, he used to.
Andrew’s line of thinking skidded to a halt when he spotted it.
Neil’s duffel bag crumpled on the ground, his racquet lying a few feet away in an equally distressed state. Neil would never have left them behind, not willingly. Not willingly.
Neil was gone. Neil was gone, not willingly. Neil was taken.
