Summary
“There was a fire. At the mall. I worked there? At Scoops Ahoy.”
The way he says the last part sounds strange, like it’s really important somehow that Eddie believes him.
“Okay,” he says, then adds, “Is that why you look like that?”
Eddie’s never met a fire with fists, but he wants Steve to tell him what happened—not just assume.
There’s a beat of silence, like Steve’s weighing his options, and Eddie knows a lie’s coming before Steve even opens his mouth.
“Yeah. Building caved in. We made it out—Robin and I. Paramedics checked me over and said I couldn’t drive, so I decided to walk.”
Almost ten miles, Eddie estimates. Sure. Totally normal thing to do in the middle of the night, battered and bruised, after escaping a fire.
But he’s pretty sure that’s all he’s going to get, so he settles on, “Good thing I came along, then.”
“Yeah.”

Eddie doesn’t expect to find Steve Harrington half-dead on a dark road in the middle of the night — or to be the one he clings to after.

“You’re being weird,” Chrissy said. “With Steve.”
Eddie sighed and tossed the rag aside. “I’m not being weird. The kid’s just… suspicious, okay? Nobody shows up in a spotless Beemer, looking that good, just to take a desk job in this dump for minimum wage. He’s digging for something, I can feel it.”
Chrissy raised a brow. “Digging for what, exactly?”
He hesitated. “Hell if I know. Me?”
She stared, then snorted. “Right. The feds finally figured it out. Send in some pretty boy in tight jeans to make you confess.”
Eddie tried not to smile, and failed completely. “You joke, but that’s exactly how they’d get me.”
“Damn right it is.”

Steve makes a face at Eddie. “You've imagined doing stuff with a guy?”
“Yeah, man,” Eddie replies, spreading his hands wide. “Doesn't everyone?”
Steve tilts his head to the side as he thinks. Maybe not very often, but his freshman year when Davey Riggs had been swim team captain? Yeah, he had definitely imagined some stuff that had made trips to the locker room kinda awkward.
“Yeah, that's true,” Steve answers, nodding. “I wonder why everybody acts like it's so gross, though.”
In the summer of 1986, Steve and Eddie have some perfectly normal fun between a couple of perfectly normal dudes.

Summary
Steve leans forward quickly, wrapping a hand around Eddie’s gloved wrist. Eddie’s visor snaps around immediately, opaque black viewport trained intensely on Steve’s hand. He doesn’t let go. Kind of impressed with his own bravery, instead, he gives Eddie’s wrist a squeeze.
“Sit down for a second,” he says. Like this is no big deal. Like he makes a habit of putting his hands on a Mandalorian, like he’s used to the way the bones of Eddie’s wrist feel vulnerable and slight in his hand, a reminder that under all that matte-black armor, Steve suspects he’s actually kind of a wiry type.
Steve’s been suspecting about that kind of stuff a lot. What started as a few idle thoughts watching Eddie and Dustin drill in the little scrubland yard behind his hut have become a lot, uh. More persistent. It’s starting to become a problem.
