Summary
There was no doubt in anybody’s mind that Steve lived for his students. He loved teaching. It brought him so much joy and fulfillment to fill their minds with knowledge.
But there was a lingering emptiness. A hollow ache in his chest.
Steve didn’t have a great track record with dating. That didn’t stop the yearning he felt for that white picket fence life, and a few kiddos of his own. He would give anything to be a doting husband and a proud father. It had been a dream of his since he had been a teenager.
It had been awhile since he had even tried to date. He usually saved that for the summers, for fear of it getting in the way of his teaching. His last relationship had ended so horribly, and it had been just a month into that school year. It was catastrophic. He had been inconsolable, and having to put on a face for his students had been absolute hell.
So, as a rule, Steve did not date. But the itch was coming back. And after a drunken hook-up with one sexy rock star, the vision was starting to look a little different…

It stops the playful atmosphere instantly.
Not everyone tells him when they have a Memento. Lucas had kept to himself, and Will had refused to tell Steve about his dream. Some of them just tell him, softly, I remembered number one-seventy-three, or I had a Memento, last night. Sometimes it’s easier to just mention that it happened, acknowledge it and move on.
And Robin, for the most part, had done this. She hadn’t mentioned the details, because she’s sure that Steve is tired of hearing them, doesn’t want to hear his death from another person’s eyes, another person who is left with his body for a day before the loop dissolves into nothingness.
AKA: In the aftermath of it all, when Steve is learning what happiness means for him, people start to remember his deaths.

It’s the first time in a while that he doesn’t know what comes next. He’s dove into the water hundreds of times. Screamed as his flesh was torn apart, heard Master of Puppets in the distance and held back tears. Felt Max’s cold, small hand in his as she laid in the hospital bed. There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma.
Steve fails. They lose.
“Steve, how many loops have you been through?”
His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
“I lost count.”
AKA: The one where Steve Harrington is stuck in a time loop, and Eddie Munson is really fucking hard to save, or: fuck Volume 2, these bitches are in love.

It’s dripping blood onto the floor.
‘Shit,’ Steve says, takes a single step back, swallows. ‘Eddie, I’m so sorry, fuck.’
Eddie can’t seem to look away, can’t bring his ethereal gaze back up where it belongs. Steve thinks he should run, he should flee. A tiny part of him knows Eddie will chase him. Eddie will catch him, outrun him easily.
It's more than a little fucked up how that thrills him.
