  2. Summary

modern, cynical take on hamilton & burr’s concurrent lives. concrete themes include substance abuse, terrible families, fundamentalist christianity, shady journalism, sexual infidelity, underground & white collar criminality, poor decision making skills, unemployment and that ex you can’t seem to leave. abstract themes include alienation, obsession, paranoia, dishonesty. Most of the plot points are pulled directly from historical events, but slightly changed and edited to fit a modern world and a cohesive narrative– so, not everything is one-for-one. hamilton comes from poverty and a broken home and rises to the upper echelons of society by talent and unhinged force of will; burr comes from wealth, influence and a family that despises him, and burns it to the ground. you already know this story.

    Summary

    To whom it may concern—
I set down this record not with hope of pardon, but that my witness might serve as warning. I am a man learned in doctrine, tempered in restraint, and bound by holy vow—yet none of that availed me when he came. His countenance was that of a bishop, his bearing sanctified. But there is no godly light in him. Only the echo of hymns warped by fire.
He smiled, and I forgot my name. He touched me, and I forgot my God.
Let no man read this and seek what I found. Let no soul follow me into that pulpit. I write this as confession, not indulgence—though I know full well what damnation I deserve.
    Sed tentatus sum. Et cessi.

    Summary

“It is well known that Hamilton can hardly keep his opinions to himself on a normal day, let alone when he is in his cups.”
“Tis true. The man cannot hold his drink. This entire scheme is a gamble but I cannot see a surer way of tipping the scales in our favor from the outset.”

    Summary

A minor change in the details of the Burr/Hamilton duel, and the world will never be the same.

    ---
“I have been wondering,” Burr began thoughtfully; his eyes widened fractionally as Hamilton made an emphatic gesture of negation.

“I do not even desire to know what you have been wondering, Colo- Aaron. This scheme is complex and chancy enough as it is. We need the British aid, and cannot proceed without it. If the ships cannot be had, you must cease the project.”

    “You are very passionate.”

“I am reluctant to abet in this harebrained scheme at all.”
