Summary
Opal bumps into Adam’s elbow hard, causing him to drop the plate in his hand. It smashes to pieces at their feet. Adam snaps.
“Damn it, Opal! Why can’t you just listen?” Anger roils through Adam in violent waves, pulsing and jagged. It makes his vision blur.
Tears spring into Opal’s eyes. She backs away from Adam, her lip trembling and hands drawn in close. “I’m sorry,” she whimpers, her voice watery.
I’m sorry, Dad, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, please stop, it hurts, I’m sorry.
Adam comes back to himself slowly, fury receding with the tide. His palms sting. It takes a moment longer for him to place the prick of fingernails. His hands are curled into fists at his sides. The realization hits Adam like a wrecking ball. Opal is scared. Of him.

Summary
They raced, tearing through streets Ronan knew better than his own mind, his own hands. Kavinsky shouted something in garbled Bulgarian, and Ronan answered in Latin, and neither understood the other. Kavinsky turned early, and his car slammed into the driver’s side of Ronan’s, and—
The sound of it. There was no sound in the world like a car crash.

Summary
“You read The Aeneid in Latin?” Adam tried desperately not to be jealous of Ronan, because really, that would be too much. He could be jealous of Gansey’s kingly presence and Declan’s beautiful suits and his classmates' expensive holidays, but he would not be petulant about Ronan being able to read an old book in a language nobody spoke anymore.
That was a lie, and Adam knew it, but there was also a small, warm part of him that was delighted by the image of Ronan reading in Latin. He imagined Ronan’s lips mouthing the words silently as he unpicked page-long sentences, tracing each line with his fingertip so he wouldn’t lose his place.
“Do you, like, have it memorized?” Adam’s voice was gleeful.
“Oh, shut the fuck up, Parrish.” Ronan rolled over so he was facing away from Adam.
Or: Adam and Ronan have a sleepover and definitely aren't weird about it.

Summary
In retrospect, those might have been the words that pushed Robert Parrish over the edge. Adam found that generally, no words were the right words when it came to his father, but there was a definite point when an argument became more than just that. Tonight, this was that moment. When Adam pushed too far.
Robert Parrish has a gun the night he deafens Adam.
