you do the work because you want to do. you do it because that is what you are supposed to do. you do it because you love her. you do the work because every poem you’ve ever written has been one last goodbye (please, just one more, i promise this is the last one, just one more, please). you memorize every wrinkle in rue’s forehead this time, as you smooth her hair down. you make sure the flat pillows are floofy enough. you ask the nurses if they could please get her another IV because this one is almost out, and she’s really really dehydrated, and you’re really worried for her. so you tuck her into those threadbare blankets you grew to hate, and you shroud yourself in rue’s dad’s ratty old purple hoodie. you eulogize your relationship one last time. and this will be the last time.
