“It’s funny, Mr. Howard.”
“What’s that?”
“You’ve won a lot of awards for your work, but I’m not so sure you’re a very good actor anymore.” Lucy said.
“Is that so?” He asked, grinding his teeth a bit and slowly spinning the empty glass on the bar top. He’d been called a bad actor before, but that was by industry professionals, know-it-all critics, and gossip rags. Pretty girls at bars didn’t go around calling him a bad actor. Not that he spent much time talking to pretty girls at bars at all.
“Mhmm.” She said. “You sit there and tell me this cause isn’t worth it. That I’ll only get hurt in the end. But to me, it’s as plain as the nose on your face… You still believe in this cause. Even if it hurts you. And I think I’d like to see you get back on the horse.” Lucy smiled, then, winking over her shoulder as she called back to him, “What do you think, cowboy?”

“Now, we got two options on how to handle this,” The Stranger continues as though she hadn’t spoken. “Either you can come with me willingly, or I kill your sweet ol’ knight.”
Maximus steps forward. “Don’t do it, Lucy.”
Tears sting her eyes as she looks first to her dad, then to Maximus. Then, finally, to The Stranger. “Promise me you won’t hurt them.”
“You have my word,” comes the low reply.
“Lucy, no. Lucy!!" But she’s unable to call back as a cloth is placed over her nose and mouth, taking every last bit of fight out of her.

Lucy MacLean knew that she should be grateful for the studio links that came with working with a bigger skating federation. They got to be on national TV to celebrate their world championship gold medal. She’d never spoken on TV about any medal before. She knew she really should be grateful about it all.
Except for the fact there would be an expectation for them to take one of the Olympic spots they’d just won. And for that she needed an American passport with her name on it.
