Summary
Charlie’s… Nice. And not in the ‘I can’t quite think of a way to describe him’ way, but in a genuine way. He’s genuinely just… Nice. He looks out for his students, often staying behind to have a chat with them between lessons or after school, he helps teachers in the English department grade when they need it and he knows he’s always there for his students because there’s always at least one in his classroom during break or lunch snacking away at something they bought in a rush during a free period or a drinking a coffee as they both (or all, when there’s more than one) settle into their work for the next half an hour.
So sue him when, yeah, the crush becomes a little less of a teenage fantasy and more of a genuine crush.
Or: Charlie’s a new teacher and he catches someone’s eye.

Charlie doesn’t register what his face is doing until Nick finally turns and pales at the sight of him.
“Oh.” Nick swallows, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his wrinkled throat. His kind eyes are full of anguish, far more serious than Charlie has ever seen them. When he talks again, his voice is steady, but infinitely soft. “It’s time, isn’t it? Our last bit of extra-time.”
Charlie’s chin trembles as he nods, a gut-wrenching sob finally escaping the lips he tried to pinch. As if his heart’s scream of agony could be contained by sheer willpower.
