With the help of his friends, Mizu has executed the craven criminal lords Heiji Shindo and Abijah Fowler. By right of conquest, and as the shogun’s generous reward, Shindo’s holdings are now his, along with a noble title. And so is the most prized bride in all of Nippon, Akemi.

Mizu’s mind begins to cuss out Taigen, as though it is its main function. It may as well be, considering the tirade it goes off on every time Taigen opens his useless mouth.

Summary: On the night the Edo fire occurs, Akemi is dubbed mockingly the Phoenix Empress as the Ito line is wiped from history. Alone, Akemi hires Mizu in order to rid Japan of the last white men, teaming up with a reluctant Mizu as she knows they have a common enemy. Mizu wants to kill Fowler and the traitors, Akemi wants to get rid of them to restore Japan to peacetime. Although tentative at first, whispers occur in courts referring to Mizu as the dragon as her and Akemi grow closer.

There had been empresses in Japan's history, some of whom ruled in a bid to avert a potential power struggle. The imperial family was nothing more than a puppet figurehead, the Ito clan were the ones who held the real power now... that was until Shogun Ito and his sons perished. All that was left now was Akemi with her marriage to Takayoshi giving her a station of power in an unforeseeable way, forcing her into sole leadership with the fire, a heavy power upon her shoulders that was not expected to be held by a woman long.
