    Summary

Phoenix had known what he was doing. He’d known that he’d be giving things up. If he hadn’t known it would be Miles, well, that was because he hadn’t wanted to think about it hard enough. Miles didn’t owe him-- a daughter, a life, a second income, a different world; Miles doesn’t owe him anything anymore.

Miles and Larry are too drunk to notice the words "5-for-1 fifteen-minute special" peeling off the greasy glass door of Burger Barn, but Wright definitely does. He points at it like a prophet anointed by salt and fryer oil, and decides that this - this ridiculous, stomach-curdling promotion - will be the hill that he dies on tonight.

    Summary

They say this shit to each other at the end of the trip because it’s the end of the trip. They won’t see each other until the next transatlantic flight, until the new year. It doesn’t count and it’s not real. They say it, they do it, maybe Miles will take Phoenix’s hand from Phoenix’s lap and hold it at all the red lights between here and the airport—they can allow themselves these things, when everything’s made up and the points don’t matter.

They’ve had the sex, Phoenix has taken his shower, maybe Miles will get soppy and do the thing with the hand in the car but—now they’re done. Until next time.

“I never considered it waiting around,” Miles says. “I never expected it to become anything more. You were giving me all that you were capable of, and—maybe it wasn’t exactly in the form I hoped for, but it was more than enough.”

“Miles,” says Phoenix, giddy. “That’s fucked up.”

    Summary

“We’ve got three days to file everything,” Athena said. “No buffer."

Phoenix nodded, reading from a legal pad. “We’re going with five filings total, staggered. First wave: 402 Motion and Motion to Compel. Second wave: 1538.5 Motion to Suppress, then a Motion in Limine pre-trial. 995 Motion draft stays in the back pocket in case prelim goes sideways. You two handle the Compel and Suppress. Focus on chain of custody and device access. Get it clean and cite 1538.5 just in case they fished something without a warrant.”

“What about the livestream?” Apollo asked.

    Phoenix didn’t blink. “I’m handling the 402.”

    Pause.

“Of course you are,” Athena said, without looking up.

“This isn’t about ego,” Phoenix said, already opening his laptop. “It’s about framing. That footage is the prosecution’s narrative keystone. If we can shake intent before prelim, we force them to rethink their theory.”

“Right,” Athena said, “and it has nothing to do with the fact that your prosecutorial counterpart is your emotionally complex maybe-soulmate.”
