Anyway, he thought as he drove to the rink. We were never together, and we’re extra not together now. He would not be letting that man see every inch of him and carry him to bed from his shower floor. He would not let him kiss his earlobe, which he liked to do every time for some reason. He was certainly not going to let him scan every inch of his body anymore. So whether there was something under the surface, spilled out messy guts getting stains on everything, Ilya wouldn’t know about it.

Ones where Shane wakes up but can’t talk anymore, ones where he wakes up and needs to relearn everything, ones where he wakes up and there’s nerve damage and Shane has to give up doing what he loves. He thinks about his father a lot when he imagines these scenarios. Of having to take care of Shane the same way he took care of him. He doesn’t really mind. Part of Shane’s brain knew this slight fear in his mind wasn’t grounded in reality. He was one of, if not the best player in the league right now. It was hardly even a controversial opinion. But he knew he could do better. He wasn’t pushing himself enough. Hell, he was more drained after a summer with Ilya than he was when he left the rink.
