Lois was in Gotham. She was there to interview Bruce Wayne: a rare opportunity for one-on-one time with the most powerful man on the Eastern seaboard. Clark was at home in Metropolis, in their shared apartment, waiting for his wife. Just a regular weekday. (No matter that it was a Saturday afternoon, pushing five o’clock. No reasonable CEO, unless they were trying to spin their way out of a scandal, would ever agree to be interviewed on the weekend. No matter. They needed a backdrop and this worked as well as any.) Clark lay on the couch that he and Lois had bought for seventy-eight dollars from a woman on Craigslist and listened intently to the conversation happening on the executive floor of the Wayne Enterprises skyscraper.
Clark listens in on Lois and Bruce.

"I'm kind of honored, though." Riko's grip softens, caressing Kevin's face. He's looking at him like prey. "You really wanted to match that badly, huh?"
"It's not for you," Kevin finally manages to say. There's not enough bite in his voice.
"King and Queen," Riko continues anyways. "One and two." He weighs the balance and finds that they're both equal. "My Queen." Riko's hand grazes Kevin's cheek, soft and tender. He trails down his chest, pulling at his jersey. He swipes his shoulder of dust that isn't there. His next words are chosen carefully; like a handpicked starting lineup.
"You were such a good girl playing on the court out there."

Lestat loosens her necktie, slips it off over her head. It looks disturbingly like a noose, in her hands, the slippery silk knot still intact. Lestat should’ve been guillotined a century and a half ago. She’s taller than Armand, so she can drop the rope of fabric around her neck without waiting for Armand to duck her head. It would be a pointless recitation of submission anyways, when Armand could’ve stopped her already a hundred times over, and Lestat isn’t crafty or patient enough to make her perform it. Impatient as always—too impatient to untie the thing and retie it for Armand, that’s what Armand would do if she were dressing Louis. But Armand isn’t playing Louis.
“You may as well look the part,” Lestat says, and shanks the knot up to Armand’s throat.
Armand and Lestat rehearse the trial. Armand plays understudy. Lestat plays puppeteer.
