“You chose me, right?” Elise pushes. “You chose me. Not Xander, not Camilla, not Leo. You chose me.”
It doesn’t respond.
“I have something special. I can do something they can’t.” She plants her fists on her hips. “I can do it. If anyone can, I can. I know it.”
Another pleased chuckle. This time she can identify Xander’s voice, Camilla’s voice, and Leo’s voice, among countless others she never met. “Is that a risk you’re willing to take? My child, if you fail, you will not come back together. Even if you succeed you may never come back together.”
“But I can do it,” she confirms.
A pause.
“Perhaps.”
Elise fails once. When she’s given another chance to do it all over again, to save everyone she’s ever loved, she takes it.
Elise fails once. Once.
