Summary
It becomes a game he plays, sometimes. When he’s bored, or trying to avoid his uncle, or something. What would you wish for, right now, if you could wish for anything the American government could give you?
Sometimes it’s an orange julius. Sometimes it’s a break from his uncle, the strength to stop the drinking. Sometimes it’s a long lost aunt or uncle or grandparent, who loves him and takes care of him and tells him anything he wants to know about his parents.
OR an exploration of Pete, the wish promised to the winner of the walk, and how that changes over time

Summary
Caesar, as a hunger games commentator, is privileged. He gets to be a part of shaping the story. Unfortunately, he also gets to see what a farce it is.
He sees the hulking careers from one and two and four, and he sees the scrawny twelve year olds, the sullen teenagers who are starving, who know that their families won’t survive without them.
He sees how sponsors prefer the tributes that are handsome, prettier, more charming. And he’s not against the hunger games - he would never think such a treasonous thought - but he doesn’t think the system is fair.

Summary
Harkness has always asked questions he shouldn’t.
His parents had worried about it when he was a kid.
“You can’t ask questions like that.” His mom had told him. “You could get in trouble.”
“But -” He’d started to protest.
“No.” His mom had kneeled down, shook his shoulders. “You could get in trouble. Real trouble, if you ask the wrong questions or say the wrong things. Promise me that you’ll be careful when talking to other people.”
“I promise.” He’d said.

Summary
One of Collie’s first memories is of his cousins watching the long walk.
“Rookie mistake, making friends.” His oldest cousin says as they watch someone get their ticket because he was shaken by seeing another walker die.
“It’s natural, stopping. If my worst enemy got shot in the gut in front of me, I would slow down.” Another says.
They’re at their grandparents house. Usually his mom tries to keep the TV off when the walk is happening, but Mom is busy in the kitchen right now.
