“What?” Ryan scooted backwards as the genie got closer. “He is a puppet, though. He, like, always has been.”
“Sure he has. But he’s not supposed to be.” The genie seemed to sense Ryan’s discomfort, but he didn’t move. “He’s meant to be a human. You have to make sure he stays this way.” -

Trucy had exclaimed that she found the piece and pointed over Phoenix’s shoulder as she did so. He turned, wondering, if it was on a shelf back there, how she could have seen it from where she sat. But he caught on to what she was doing as she leaned over the table and reached towards his head. When she pulled her arm back, she had the missing puzzle piece in between her thumb and forefinger.
She smiled. “It was behind your ear!”
“What?” Phoenix let his mouth fall open in only half-mock surprise. “I’m always losing stuff back there! What would I do without you?”A nice father-daughter afternoon with absolutely zero interruptions /s

Summary
One thought repeated itself in my head as I stewed, day after day. The thought that my loyal dog would attack anything I told him to. Maybe if I accidentally moved my hand in a dismissive manner while seeing one out the door, our city’s wealth could be used correctly. I knew that such a thought made me a monster, but I grew at peace with it as the days trekked on. Destroying the darkness means becoming familiar with it yourself.
Then, one day, I was invited to a private meeting with such a nobleman. As the letter was delivered to me and I scanned it over, my heart began to race. Balmung lifted his head at my side as if he were trying to read it as well.
He could tell— he could sense the darkness swirling within me. And he loved it.
