    Summary

It is no secret that my intimate friend and companion, Sherlock Holmes, is sometimes subject to ‘black moods,’ as I feel privy to call them, for I bear the brunt of the intensity of his emotions. My friend prides himself on his mind, his work ethic, his intelligence, and yet ruins it with the use of cocaine and morphine; that blasted seven percent solution has become the bane of my existence in times such as these. I have, unfortunately, made that very clear in some of my writings. Though I make my disapproval obvious, he does not wane his use no matter my urgings; he reduces his use only if an interesting crime has been committed. Since his defeat of Professor James Moriarty, ‘interesting’ crime in England has decreased, and his Moroccan case hangs about Baker Street. Recovering lost lead pencils is of no interest to him, only the types of bewildering cases which I cover here in these very pages.
